The following is the career path of an IAS officer depending upon their allotted cadre.
Stage 1: Training– Training is done in two phases.
Phase I: Training at LBSNAA: After qualifying UPSC Civil Services Exam, the candidate first joins Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA).
Here their routine starts at 6:00 am sharp. This includes exercise, horse riding for two hours. They have 8-10 hours of academic activity including lectures, sports, and extracurricular activities from 9:30 onwards. Trekking to nearby rural areas & Bharat Darshan (India’s Study Tour) is also part of their curriculum.
This routine may change as per their promotion from a trainee to an IAS officer.
Phase II Training at LBSNAA: includes about a week-long foreign training with one of India’s diplomatic missions abroad.
Stage 2: Attached with Central Government at the nominal position of an Assistant Secretary for 3 months
Stage 3: Posting as SDM or Joint Magistrate/Sub Collector
Stage 4: As Municipal Commissioner, DDO/CDO
Stage 5: As DM/Collector
Stage 6: State Secretariats at Director/Joint Secretary level.
Stage 7: IAS officer can opt for deputation at Central Government after serving for a few years.
Stage 8: Principal/Additional Secretary (in State Secretariat/Central Secretariat)
Stage 9: Now he may be promoted to Chief Secretary of a state
Stage 10: Cabinet Secretary- This is the position for which every IAS officer dreamt of. The highest position in the carrier of an IAS officer is to become a Cabinet Secretary.
